If you know one or more morel collectors, your task will be simplified: as soon as these people will find you can begin your research.
If you do not know anyone, your task will be a little more complicated but I can give you some ideas.
In general, I observe the progress of vegetation: the bursting of the first buds, end flowerings of certain plants like snowdrops or snowflake flowers (Galanthus nivalis or vernum Leucojum), early flowering of the wood anemones (Anemone nemorosa) and daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) are good indicators.
I already tried to direct link between the stage of development of certain plants and the appearance of morels for now without success.
The weather also has a major role : a rather cold winter seems to favor an earlier morel.
A period of good weather causing a warming of the earth, followed by a period of rain, cooler, or even a return of frost and snow of spring seem to be good indicators of the arrival of morel mushrooms in general 7 to 10 days if the weather becomes spring.
On the other side, the presence of cold wind is a factor delaying at least 5 days.
One must also consider the location of places visited: some places at the same altitude, may be earlier than others depending on terrain, moisture and exposure.
Depending on these factors and from my observations, I expect to find my first morel in 2012 between March 23 and April 4.
That still leaves an imprecise range of a couple of weeks, hence the importance of establishing a good search strategy!
